Short Stories

Our Foundation & History

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) was established in 1990 following Namibia’s independence, taking over from earlier football structures and becoming the country’s official governing body for the sport. Shortly after its founding, the NFA became affiliated with both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1992, marking its entry into the global and continental football community.

From its earliest days, the NFA’s mission has been to cultivate a football culture and industry that provides entertainment, economic benefits, and development opportunities for all Namibians. It oversees national competitions, including the Namibia Premier Football League, NFA Cup, First Division, regional leagues, and women’s competitions, while also supporting youth and grassroots programmes aimed at identifying and nurturing talent across the country.

Over the years, the NFA has become a pillar of football development in Namibia, championing structured leagues, coaching education, referee training, and community engagement. Its national teams have competed at continental levels, with notable milestones such as participation in the African Nations Cup and success in regional tournaments like the COSAFA Cup.

Guided by a commitment to professionalism, inclusivity, and growth, the NFA continues to play a vital role in strengthening football at every level — from grassroots outreach in local communities to high‑performance pathways that help players, coaches, and officials thrive.
